Faith events not to miss: 10-16-09

This year's annual Festival of Faiths in Kansas City will feature Eboo Patel, founder and executive director of the Chicago-based Interfaith Youth Core. He's the author of Acts of Faith, which describes how important it is to give young people -- especially young Muslims -- a healthy alternative to radical religion.

Patel will speak at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Congregation Beth Shalom, 9400 Wornall. After his talk I'll be moderating a Q&A session with him. The Festival link I've given you above will provide information about how to attend. Patel also will speak at 10 a.m. that day to students at Notre Dame de Sion High School.

And speaking of youth and interfaith activities, the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council's annual Table of Faiths luncheon will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Hyatt at Crown Center. Its theme will be "Celebrating Interfaith Youth." The Table link I've given you here will show you how to attend.

I've been following area youth this year as they have become active in interfaith activities through the new Interfaith Youth Alliance and am writing a piece about this for The Kansas City Star. It should run in early November.

Why is all this important? Because if our young people don't understand the importance of understanding religions other than their own (if any), they'll never be able to find ways to live harmoniously in a culture that is increasingly pluralistic in terms of religion.

Give Pope Benedict XVI this: When it comes to Jewish-Christian relations, he keeps trying, even if sometimes his words or actions are awkward or not well thought through. The Vatican said this week that he would visit the major synagogue of Rome on Jan. 17, the annual day of dialogue and study between Catholics and Jews. Jan. 17 also happens to be the anniversary of the 1945 liberation of Warsaw in World War II, and the pope might do well to take note of that and to take note of what happened to Poland's nearly 3.5 million Jews in the Holocaust. He need make no mention of the fact that I was born one day after Warsaw's liberation. Really. It's OK.

So many people wonder why President Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize, but they don't understand what American has become in the World Community. American has become to the World Community what KCFreeThinkers.org has become to this blog: an arrogant, self-righteous, openly-hostile player who opposes those who have done them no harm. Because of our superior attitude, somehow we managed to attack a nation who was not opposing us, because we believed that they were thinking evil thoughts. And, in our arrogance, that became justification for pre-emptive attacks. When we found those attacks to be totally unjustified, we found other self-righteous means of justification. That's been our role under President Bush, and the rest of the World Community has become deeply concerned that we are no longer a Nation which can be counted on to do the right thing.

KCFreeThinkers.org has marginalized those in the religious community, especially Christians, as some imaginary enemy that they must oppose in whatever pre-emptive way necessary. They rise up against those who do not oppose them. Cole has gone so far as to claim that it is his right and his duty to oppose any belief in God, wherever he finds it, even though he cannot begin to prove that God does not exist, or that the supernatural does not exist. In his arrogance he has marginalized his imaginary enemy, and has gone on a pre-emptive strike against them. His enemy is deserving in his imagination. That is how American looked to the rest of this world under Presdient Bush.

The Germans also marginalized their imaginary enemy that they found in the Jews. The end result is that they could justify any evil action they wanted, because others were inferior in some way, and their imaginary enemy had conspiratorial evil intent to do them harm. President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize because he is helping to change the image of the most powerful nation back into a player who wants to do what is right, one that does not claim superiority due to money, philosophy, or anything else. We are again becoming a player who is not an openly hostile, arrogant and conceited Nation who attacks others without cause because of paranoid, delusional thoughts that others are secretly opposing them in some way. Our image is being restored in this world as a thoughtful nation that values others as we value ourselves. Our imagine is being restored as a friend of the World Community, instead of an openly-hostile, arrogant bully on the block. There is no question that is doing much to promote world peace, more than anything else that could be done.

KCFreeThinkers.org members are in a moral crisis. They have an image of themselves that is not supported by their behavior. So they've degenerated into attacks and insults in an effort to restore their self-image. Oddly enough, their image here was destroyed here in the first place by the same hostile behavior. So they don't know what to do in order to 'save face' among their peers. And, quite honestly, there is nothing they can do to reverse what they've been doing. Attacks on others can't restore it, even though that is the only thing they can think to do. Attacks on others who do not oppose them such as Susan will definitely not work because, as I just said, that's how they've destroyed their image in the first place.

They're finally faced with the question, "What is the right thing to do?" and they're finding that they don't measure up ... in their *own* eyes. They're finding that morality is not as relative as they once believed. They're finding that something is convicting them of their wrong behavior, and it is not us. But they want to blame us for their discomfort, anyway. It is their own consciences that convict them of absolute wrongdoing. They could just ignore us, but they can't ignore their own consciences. Everywhere they go, there they are. They're starting to get tired of hanging around themselves, and they're taking it out on anyone who happens to be in their path.

It is a powerfully transforming question, "What is the right thing to do?" That question plants seeds in anyone who starts to seriously ponder such a question. Because the conscience knows the answers, in a language that is too deep for words ... in spiritual words.

Cole and Iggy -- about your verses, I think we are so used to the Bible being used to condemn people that we automatically read it that way.

When I consider the fact that many of the early Church fathers, such as Origen, believed in the ultimate salvation of everyone, it's clear to me that the teaching that non-believers are going to hell for eternity is not the only way to translate and interpret the Bible.

Indeed, the Tentmaker.org site is full of articles by Bible scholars explaining the original meanings of verses that got mis-translated to fit with the "old time religion" teachings about most people being predestined for eternal flames.

It was very interesting to read the chapters by Hannah Whittal Smith (which were later deleted from her book), in which she shared her revelation that God would indeed accomplish the salvation of the whole world. When she got home (following this revelation) and opened her Bible, it became quite clear to her that this was exactly what the Scriptures had been saying all along.
